Ngoài việc nâng cao từ vựng thông qua đọc như thầy đã từng giới thiệu, học prefix, root, suffix cũng là 1 cách học từ vựng hiệu quả. Rất nhiều từ vựng trong English, đặc biệt là các academic words, có cùng roots, prefix và suffix, bắt nguồn từ các languages khác như Latin hay Greek. Việc ghi nhớ roots, prefix và suffix sẽ giúp các em nhớ từ mới tốt hơn, và đặc biệt là đoán nghĩa của từ mới (khi làm bài Reading) tốt hơn.

Ví dụ, các từ sau đều có chung root “archy”

Hierarchy (a system for organizing people according to their status in a society, organization, or other group)

Patriarchy (a society, system, or organization in which men have all or most of the power and influence)

Matriarchy (a family, community, or society that is ruled by women, especially one in which women also own and control property)

Monarchy (a type of government in which a country is ruled by a king or queen)

Oligarchy (a country governed by a small group of people)

Diarchy (is a form of government in which two individuals, the diarchs, are the heads of state)

Nhìn vào definition của các từ trên các em nhận thấy nghĩa của chúng đều liên quan “to rule” hay “to have authority”. Giả sử khi đọc 1 reading passage em gặp một từ mới “anarchy”, nếu em biết prefix a-, an- (not, without) và root -archy (ruling), e sẽ đoán được nghĩa của từ anarchy. Anarchy is a situation in which people are behaving in a way that ignores normal rules and laws, and are unable to be controlled.

Em dễ dàng có được hầu hết các prefix, root/stem hay suffix phổ biến trong English từ các sách dạy vocabulary, sách luyện TOEFL, SAT, GRE và GMAT, hay đơn giản chỉ cần google.
